Kuching is linked by air to several other major cities in Malaysia such as Johor Baru, Kuala Lumpur, Penang and Kota Kinabalu. There are also international flights running to Singapore, Hong Kong and Brunei among others. Miri, Sibu and Bintulu airports have recently been either rebuilt or upgraded, thus enabling them to handle larger aircrafts. In 2001, Sarawak’s airports handled about 5 million passengers and about 30,000 metric tons of cargo.

Malaysia Airlines (MAS), the national carrier, offers air services within Malaysia as well as to more than 70 international destinations in 36 countries and all six continents. Other significant carriers are AirAsia, Maswing, Transmile, Royal Brunei Air (RBA) and Singapore Airlines (SIA), Silk Air, Batavia Air. MAS operates daily flights from the national capital of Kuala Lumpur to Kuching and has direct links with the major cities in Europe, Australia, America and Asia. Air Asia has also expanded its services in Sarawak as well as to the South East Asia region. Tickets may be purchased online at respective airline website or at one of the various airports located in the State. Flights connect to all the major cities in Sarawak as well as at travel agencies.

Sarawak also has rural airstrips serving remote settlements such as Ba Kelalan, Bario, Long San, Long Seridan, Long Bangga and Belaga. Regular scheduled air services using DHC6 Twin Otters-Flights to these airstrips are usually constrained by limited time available due to visibility problems. Chartered airplanes and helicopter services are also available. The government provides a “Flying Doctor Service” to cater for communities in inaccessible areas in the Sarawak interior.
