Climatically, Sarawak is free from natural calamities like typhoons, earthquakes and tropical cyclones. It has an equatorial climate with relatively uniform temperature, high humidity and abundant rainfall. Its excellent climate and environment has enhanced the State as an ideal location for doing business. Endowed with a bountiful supply of natural resources, especially petroleum and natural gas, Sarawak has much to offer to prospective investors.
One of the world’s largest exporters of tropical timber, the government promotes high value-added timber processing. It has also put in place the Log Export Restriction Policy. To promote downstream processing, several industrial areas have been primarily designed to meet the requirements of integrated timber-based operations.
Sarawak is also rich with both metallic and non-metallic mineral resources such as silica sand, kaolinitic clay and coal which provide vast potential for value-added processing. It also has good quality kaolinitic and ball clay deposits which are suitable for use in the manufacture of ceramic products.
Its vast reserves of natural resources promising opportunities in the field of biotechnology while its forest resources may yet prove to be a major source of exciting discoveries.
Hence, the potential for investment in petroleum, petrol-chemical, agro-based, bio-tech and forestry-related industries, is tremendous.
As such the State is capable of sustaining more resource-based industries and providing great potential in value-added processing ventures.
The main priority and promoted areas of investment are in:
1. Resource Based clusters
● Wood Based
● Agro-Based & Food Processing
● Petrochemical & Gas
● Palm Oil Based
● Ceramics
2. Non-resource Based Clusters
● Shipbuilding
3. Policy-driven clusters
● Electrical & Electronics
● Biotechnology
